Weezer released their 20th studio album, Gold Album, today, adding a new chapter to the band’s color-named album sequence — after Blue, Green, Red, White, Teal and Black, they now enter the “golden era.” Production on the self-titled new album returns to the old ways: after the 30th anniversary tour, the four members reunited in a rehearsal room in Orange County, California.
The production team consists of Klas Ahlund and Kenneth Blume (aka Kenny Beats) — the former bringing a more mathematical, rigorous arrangement approach, while the latter aimed to make “the most violent Weezer album ever.” The album contains 10 tracks in total, including the lead single “Shine Again” and “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” a collaboration with Wednesday, performed live on The Tonight Show on August 19. Cuomo stressed on the show that this record is the product of four people colliding face to face — vulnerability and honesty can only happen between people, not something AI or a single person working on a computer can replace.
