Funko’s line of Jurassic franchise dinosaurs must be improving because with each passing year I find myself more and more drawn to them. When Funko first started making dinosaurs I found them rather ugly, with rare exception, but last year I became quite smitten with their Aquilops and even picked up a couple other Rebirth dinosaurs that I haven’t reviewed yet. This year is their strongest yet, with their Compsognathus trio, Alpha raptor, and baby Stegosaurus figures all being mandatory additions to my collection. So far, I’ve only picked up the Stegosaurus, let’s take a look!
With some foliage hanging out of its mouth, the Funko Pop Stegosaurus directly references the scene in The Lost World: Jurassic Park where Sarah Harding pets a baby Stegosaurus whilst it feeds away from the herd. The Stegosaurus scene is one of the best in the entire film but is somewhat ruined by Harding herself. In the scene directly after she has molested the baby Stego and dodged death from its belligerent parents she lectures Nick Van Owen, who is lighting a cigarette, that they’re there to observe and study the dinosaurs, not interact with them. This sloppy and hypocritical character writing for poor Julianne Moore (among the best actresses of our time) is prevalent throughout the film and has me rolling my eyes every time I watch it.
Funko’s baby Stegosaurus is positioned with the head inquisitively tilted up and to the right and with the tail swinging down and to the right. With its oversized head, dim expression, short body, pudgy limbs, and stumpy tail, it is positively adorable. Even the eyes work in its favor. On some dinosaurs they look like vacant black voids but here, they make the Stego appear wide-eyed and expressive.
Details are minimal and consist mostly of wrinkles over the body but there are some scales on the face, below the eyes. The beak has grooves etched into it and the keratinous plates have a layered texture on them. The leaves in the mouth are nicely textured too.
The figure is standard gray in color with a pinkish belly and a pinkish wash over the body that makes the figure appear caked in dusty dirt. The toenails are light gray in color, and the eyes are black, of course, with a glossy finish. The figure measures 6” long and stands 2.75” tall at its highest point. There’s no point in calculating scale with a figure like this.
The Funko Pop! baby Stegosaurus is a cute, charming little figure that’s sure to put a smile on even the most curmudgeonly collector’s face. Like all of my Funko Pop! dinosaurs mine stands on my desk, away from my main collections but in a place where a touch of whimsy is much appreciated.
