The first trailer for Matchbox The Movie rolled into Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) this afternoon, giving fans an early look at Mattel’s legendary die-cast brand in a new, globe-trotting lane.
John Cena, Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, and Teyonah Parris attended the SDCC presentation for the action comedy from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios.
Cena stars as Sean, an undercover CIA agent who returns to his hometown after a long absence. His arrival pulls a group of childhood friends (“The Matchbox Gang”) into an international chase — and a mission to save the world.
Sam Hargrave directed and executive-produced the film from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The cast also includes Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger produced through Skydance Media. Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz produced for Mattel Studios alongside Jules Daly. Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin served as executive producers.
The project shifts Matchbox from miniature vehicles (two of which are sold every second, worldwide) to full-scale action, using the brand as the launchpad for a story built around cars, friendship, espionage, and international mayhem.
Matchbox The Movie will premiere on Apple TV on Oct. 9.
