Jem and the Holograms is getting a second live-action adaptation, this time as a television series, according to an exclusive report from Deadline.
The series is in development with Amazon MGM Studios, which released Masters of the Universe in theaters last week. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films will produce with Hasbro Entertainment. Joy, Nolan, and Athena Whickam will executive produce with Gabriel Marano for Hasbro Entertainment.
Kilter Films produces the live-action Fallout, which aired its second season this year. A third season, slated for next year, was greenlit in May. Joy and Nolan co-created Westworld, which aired on HBO from 2016 through 2022. Kilter will helm the Fourth Wing adaptation,
Jem and the Holograms debuted in 1985 and aired for three seasons, repeating episodes in syndication through the 1990s. The animated series followed record company owner Jerrica Benton, who performed as her alter ego, Jem, with her band, The Holograms. A Saturday morning staple for kids in the 1980s and 1990s, the program was a collaboration between Hasbro, Sunbow Productions, and Marvel Productions, who also produced G.I. Joe and Transformers. Animation was by Toei Animation. A live-action film, directed by John M. Chu, was released in theaters in 2015.
The IP has seen a resurgence in recent years, with a series of dolls from The Loyal Subjects (TLS), including SDCC exclusives at last year’s event. Hasbro committed last year to manufacturing more toys and collectibles from the series. A fan-run convention, JemCon, is in its 20th year.
A number of Hasbro Entertainment properties are currently in development, including The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series at Netflix, Baldur’s Gate at HBO, and a live-action Power Rangers series at Disney+.
