Across the various online Jurassic World collector communities I’ve seen increased talk about a new sort of collectable that appears to have slipped in under the radar, Blokees. A Chinese toy company, Blokees produces buildable action figures under various licensed properties. They appear to be rather popular with the Transformers community, but I had never heard of them until the Jurassic World toys hit the scene. A lot of hype has been generated by these little action figures, with the highly sought after Tyrannosaurus going for $30+, which might not seem like a lot until you realize that Blokees are tiny blind-bag toys.

My Walmart has recently started carrying Jurassic World Blokees. Upon spotting them, I thought they were a new batch of Captivz, since these also come packaged in plastic eggs. Once I realized what they were I decided to see what all the fuss was about and bought a couple. I was hoping for dinosaur figures but ended up with a Triceratops skull and Brachiosaurus skeleton. The Brachiosaurus skeleton was decent enough to motivate me to try again for a dinosaur (that wasn’t a skeleton) and my second pull landed me a Jeep and Ankylosaurus. I went back a third time and ended up with a gyro-sphere and another Brachiosaurus skeleton. Now I’m starting to get fatigued by these blind bag toys, disappointed that with 6 eggs I only have one dinosaur to show for it!

This assortment of Blokees appears to be the second Jurassic World series. As you can tell, the eggs don’t just contain dinosaurs, but most of them do, which makes my bad luck with these all the more frustrating. I want the dinosaurs, not the skeletons and vehicles! Dinosaurs in this series include Ankylosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Velociraptor, Mosasaurus, Indominus, and Brachiosaurus. Some eggs come with extra skeletal elements that are supposed to be used to assemble a Triceratops skeleton, but I’ve only gotten a couple of limbs so far. Since these are small and simple toys, I decided to feature two in the same review, the Ankylosaurus and Brachiosaurus skeleton.

As you can tell from the pictures, there’s definitely some assembly required with these! These are a far cry from the Captivz “Build N’ Battle” figures that come in two or three pieces and the Blokees feel more like a small Lego kit. Simple instructions are included and assembly is fairly straightforward. The pieces all snap together and no glue is required. Once assembled, the toys have a decent degree of articulation.

The Brachiosaurus skeleton is more scientifically informed that you might expect. Although all the Blokees dinosaurs have a chunky build with wonky proportions, it generally works in their favor, making them cute and charming. And that aside, the skeletal anatomy is sound here. I was quite impressed with the details of the cervical vertebrae and the finely detailed limb bones. The Brachiosaurus stands 3.75” (9.27 cm) tall to the top of the head and measures about 6” (15.24 cm) long.

The Brachiosaurus skeleton is articulated at the base of the skull, base of the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and base of the tail. Most of the pieces attach via ball-and-sockets so they’re able to rotate around and swivel every which way. The Brachiosaurus skeleton can even be displayed in a rearing pose! In fact, that’s how I display it and when I took my pictures I forgot to straighten the forelimbs, so they’re bent in somewhat, but I assure you, they can be straightened out!

The Ankylosaurus is articulated at the jaw, base of the head, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and at both the base and middle of the tail. It measures 4” (10.16 cm) long. It’s a Jurassic World style Ankylosaurus, a retro design that I’ve never cared for, but it’s a decent approximation of it despite the intentionally odd proportions. The toy doesn’t skimp on detail but there are no paint apps, it is entirely dark green expect for the orange eyes with black pupils. The application of the eyes is good though, and even include white dots of eye shine.

Blokees cost less than $5 per egg and for that price you’re getting a fun to assemble and versatile little toy that punches above its price bracket. I don’t like them as much as the Captivz, but I like them more than the Mattel minis. I just wish I landed more of the dinosaurs! I’ll probably buy a couple more but if I get skunked again that might be my breaking point.
