Velociraptor (Baby) (Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary, Captivz Build N’ Battle Dinos by ToyMonster)

It’s Jurassic June! And this year I’m only reviewing Jurassic Park (and World) merchandise during this holiest of months for Jurassic fans. Yes, I know we review Jurassic stuff all year long, but I haven’t reviewed anything Jurassic for two months so I’m excited to get back into it for this special occasion. Today we’re looking at perhaps my favorite toy in the entire Captivz range, the baby Velociraptor from the original Jurassic Park.

This figure is part of ToyMonster’s Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Captivz line. The JP30 line differs from other Captivz lines in that all the figures represent animals from the first three Jurassic Park films, and each comes with a small trading card inspired by the Kenner cards of the 90’s. Three versions of this figure exist: a naturalistic-colored one, a gold one, and a translucent amber colored one.

The baby Velociraptor is unique from all other Captivz toys in that it’s a two-piece set. The raptor and egg are two separate figures. It would have been easy for ToyMonster to have the raptor molded into the egg, without sculpting the lower half of its body, but they didn’t. The baby raptor can be removed from the egg and has a complete lower half. You get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing (pardon my reference to another Steven Spielberg movie). On the inside of the egg are two little indents where the feet rest, making sure that the baby sits snuggly inside of it while gripping the eggshell with its forelimbs.

The egg is eggshell white with a pitted texture and gray wash over it. A seam that wraps around it is cleverly disguised as a crack in the egg and the open portion has a jagged edge to it. The baby raptor is tan with pink and red accents that make it appear freshly hatched and bloody. The tongue is red and the giant eyes are yellow with black elliptical pupils. A silver JP logo is embossed on the side of the egg.

The detail work is excellent for such a diminutive figure. Each tooth is individually well defined and pointy. A wrinkled texture over the body gives the toy a fetal appearance and rows of crocodile-like scutes run down the back. The tail is molded against the left leg and the feet are tucked against the body. With the raptor inside the egg the toy stands 2” (5.08 cm) tall. I won’t bother trying to calculate scale with this one but it’s too large to scale well with the Hammond Collection figures. It would probably look decent with Amber Collection figures though.

Although it is no longer available in stores this figure is easy to find on eBay in all its color variants for a reasonable price. The Captivz JP30 baby Velociraptor is a neat little collectable, and well worth seeking out for Jurassic Park fans. Happy Jurassic June!
