Triceratops (Jurassic Park: 30th Anniversary & Color Change Captivz Build N’ Battle Dinos, by ToyMonster)

Because of the recent holiday happenings around the house I decided I wanted to keep my workload light this week and review something quick and easy, so I turned to my unreviewed assortment of Captivz figures. My pair of Captivz Triceratops quickly caught my eye. The Captivz Triceratops was one of the first Captivz figures I acquired, and it was the one that cemented in my mind that these figures were the occasional purchase. We’ll be looking at two versions of the figure today. One was released in the Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary set and the other was released in the Color Change set.

The Captivz Triceratops measures 3.75” (9.53 cm) long when including the bend in the tail and stands 1.5” (3.81 cm) tall to the top of the frill. Scaled down from the 30’ (9 meters) estimated length of Triceratops the figure comes out to be 1/96 in scale. The figure comes in three separate pieces: the head, body and legs, and tail. It is presented with the head lifted up, looking rightward, and mouth open. The heel of the right forelimb is slightly lifted and the tail curls to the right. There’s a lot of dynamism in this little figure and it looks agitated and formidable, as a Triceratops should.

Immediately noticeable with this figure is a high level of fine detail. Even among other Captivz figures, the Triceratops stands out. It is entirely covered in pebbly scales, even in hard to reach places like the back of the frill. Creases and skin folds are most evident in places like the throat, limb joints, and underside. The beak, horns, epoccipitals, and claws are all well refined. This all makes the figure surprisingly lifelike, despite its diminutive size.

The Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary version of the figure is slate gray with a pale gray wash that really brings out the abundance of fine detail. The beak and horns are also pale gray, and the eyes are black and shiny. It’s a really simple paintjob but appealing in the same way that monochrome figures can be. It looks like the figure stepped out of an old black and white movie!

When the color change figure is hot it’s white with orange patterning over the face and frill, and orange stripes along the back. When cold the figure is green with the same orange patterning. The horns and beak are gray, the inside of the mouth is pink, and the eyes are black and shiny. The orange looks great with both the white and green coloration. The fine details look better on the gray version but the eye catching colors used here make it hard to pick a favorite between the two.

Accuracy pendants likely won’t be impressed with the figure, as it’s clearly a Jurassic franchise Triceratops with all the inaccuracies from the creature design carried over here. These include elephantine limbs and a tail that’s too long. Fans of the Jurassic franchise, mini-figures, and ceratopsian aficionados will likely find much to appreciate. The Captivz Triceratops is not currently available, but the gray version can be easily found on eBay for reasonable prices.

With the Captivz Nasutoceratops, Pachyrhinosaurus, and Sinoceratops.
