Dennis Nedry Track & Chase Pack (Jurassic Park, ’93 Classic by Mattel)

Today we’re looking at the Dennis Nedry Track & Chase Pack, part of the now defunct ’93 Classic line that was released in celebration of Jurassic Park’s 30th anniversary. The set was the second to last one to be released before the line was rebranded as the Jurassic World: Reimagined line, which so far has still proved inferior to its predecessor line. This is an odd set, which includes a comically buff Dennis Nedry, motorcycle, and Velociraptor. Although an unusual combination of toys, they mostly make sense within the line once examined on their own. Let’s get into it!

First, we’ll start by looking at the packaging, because it’s awesome! On the box we get some retro-style artwork that harkens back to the Kenner days. Dennis Nedry can be seen speeding along on his motorcycle, launching a rocket at a fleeing Velociraptor. Palm trees and the Jurassic Park gates can be seen silhouetted against a vibrant orange sunset. A small window reveals the Velociraptor toy that’s inside the box. On the back we get the figures posed similarly to the artwork on the front and smaller images illustrating how the action features work and what’s included in the set.

Although this blog strictly deals with dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals the real highlight in this set has to be Dennis Nedry. This version of the disgruntled computer programmer depicts the antagonist as a too-swol-to-control action hero. He is a direct homage to the Jurassic Park series two Kenner action figure, which depicts Nedry as an inaccurate and generic looking action hero that looks nothing like actor Wayne Knight. Like that figure, this one sports a red and blue ensemble and “tranq-spray gun”.

What’s unusual, and comical about this figure is that despite being completely jacked Nedry still has a chubby face and his sly squint and smirk. It’s a visually jarring juxtaposition! Nedry is articulated at the neck, shoulders, elbows, waist, hips, and knees. He stands about 4” (10.16 cm) tall, making him taller than Mattel’s other Nedry figures.  He’s wearing clear glasses, an orange tactical vest and brown belt, baggy blue jeans, and brown combat boots. A painted watch is on his left wrist and there’s an unpainted watch on his right wrist, surely some kind of oversight in production. His hair is black, and the details of his face are precisely painted.

On his back, Nedry sports a silver set of tanks attached to a hose and sprayer that attaches around his waist. The sprayer attaches to his forearm and hand. A gas mask sits over his face that makes him look a bit like Mad Max’s Immortan Joe. With his motorcycle he would fit right in with the Mad Max franchise!

The motorcycle pays homage to Kenner’s Jurassic Park: Dino Raiders Strike Cycle and sports a striped green and orange paintjob that’s similar to it. On the right side is an extendable arm and clamp for capturing dinosaurs and there’s a rocket launcher on the left side. The bike has a kickstand that helps it stand up for display purposes and wheels that can rotate around. The front wheel and handles can also move back-and-forth. It’s a cool addition to the set that’s sure to make Owen Grady jealous.

The Velociraptor is one that we’ve seen before, originally released in the Tim & Lex kitchen Encounter set. It’s “okay” but I really would have preferred something other than ANOTHER raptor repaint. The Kenner line had a diverse assortment of animals to choose from: Dimetrodon, Pteranodon, Coelophysis. Heck, even an Estemmenosuchus would have been nice, seeing as how they included a Scutosaurus in a different set. And surely a Dilophosaurus would have been more appropriate, but we did get one of those in a different ’93 Classic set.

This raptor pays homage to a 2001 Hasbro Jurassic Park 3 toy, which makes it an odd addition to a 1993 inspired line of toys. The paintjob does look cool though. The body is mostly cookies and cream colored, with black flecks over a creamy white body. Black racing stripes run down the side and down the thighs, with red over the back of the figure. The claws are not painted but thanks to paint apps on the tail and legs it looks like a decently complete paintjob otherwise. The eyes are yellow with black pupils, the teeth are white, and the inside of the mouth is pink. The lower jaw and throat are white.

This Velociraptor stands 3” (7.62 cm) tall at the hips and measures 6.5” (16.51 cm) long. All the toys in the set are about 1/18 in scale, as intended. The raptor’s jaw is articulated, and its head can swivel about at the neck. The arms are articulated at the shoulders, and the legs are articulated at the hips. The details on the raptor mostly consist of wrinkles with the only sculpted scales being scutes on the fingers and toes. The proportions are off, with a short tail and large feet, but this is an older figure and I’m also pretty sure I’ve reviewed this mold before.

Because the Velociraptor is kind of lame, and I didn’t need a buff Nedry on a motorcycle, I almost skipped this set. I ended up getting it because it was on clearance for $11 and I can’t help it, body-builder Dennis puts a smile on my face. Also, buying it means I’ve now completed the ’93 Classic line. The set is a clever one in that it pays homage to three different Jurassic Park toys, but the Velociraptor feels shoehorned in, if for no other reason than that it doesn’t pay homage to any original Kenner toy. Although the ’93 Classic line is finished, and this set was released well over a year ago, it’s still available for retail price online.
