Crayola Unveils Creative Styles Tool for Adults

Crayola continues to make a positive impact on the toy industry, bringing joy not only to children but also to adults with the launch of the Crayola Creative Styles Tool.

This free tool helps parents and teachers identify and understand different creative styles, enabling them to recognize individual creative strengths, appreciate others’ styles, and nurture creativity for continued growth.

Users take about five minutes to answer a short set of questions on Crayola’s website, and receive an individualized report that identifies their creative tendencies, explains how they approach the creative process, and offers practical guidance for collaborating effectively with people with different creative styles.

The styles are broken down into three dimensions of creativity.

  • Think – This dimension examines how people generate and respond to ideas, ranging from divergent (expansive, broad) to convergent (curated, focused) thought, to guide their creative process.
  • Engage – This dimension analyzes how people participate in, form, and respond to creative experiences, ranging from a reflective style (remembering, anticipating) to a transformational style (actively experiencing and experimenting).
  • Perceive – This dimension reveals how people make sense of and perceive the world, ranging from distinct (independent) to connected (interwoven) perceptions, providing opportunities for innovation.

“These insights help you understand your creative style and appreciate the different ways creativity shows up in others,” says Cheri Sterman, Senior Director of Education at Crayola. “We believe creativity is innate to the human experience and needs to be nurtured at every stage of life. When parents and teachers understand their creative styles, it boosts their confidence in being able to support children’s creativity.”

Crayola understands that embracing creativity is a two-way street, enriching the experiences of both children and the parents and teachers who support them. Therefore, Crayola has implemented initiatives to broaden how creativity is understood and how it appears in everyday life, as proven by the launch of the Creative Styles Tool.

Development for the Creative Styles Tool began five years ago in collaboration with experts in the field, including Dr. Gerard Puccio, Distinguished Professor at the State University of New York and Chair of the Center for Applied Imagination at Buffalo State University.

Sterman reiterates Crayola’s mission with the Creative Styles Tool: “Our ultimate ambition is to empower adults to embrace creativity as an essential life skill. Each customized report confirms that every participant is creative, and that the world needs both divergent thinkers who brainstorm, as well as convergent thinkers who curate ideas.”

The launch of the Creative Styles Tool coincides with the fifth anniversary of Crayola Creativity Week (Jan. 26-Feb. 1), a free week-long learning program that provides educators and parents with dynamic and motivating Crayola content.
