Aquilops (Jurassic World: Rebirth, Pop! Movies by Funko Inc.)

Move over Bumpy, there’s a new cutie in the Jurassic World franchise. Introduced in Jurassic World: Rebirth, Dolores the Aquilops stole the hearts of children and adults alike and has now been merchandised to death! What was previously a mostly unheard of genus of early Cretaceous ceratopsian is now a household name with several toys to her likeness, ranging from plushies, to LEGO sets, to Halloween costume accessories. Today we’re looking at the Funko Pop! Aquilops and while I don’t often buy Funko Pop! figures how could I resist this one? And say what you will about the quality of the Jurassic World movies, I love it when they bring little oddballs like Aquilops and Lystrosaurus into the public consciousness.

Aquilops americanus was discovered in 1997 in Montana and described in 2014. Aquilops is only known from a partial, possibly juvenile skull, and it is estimated that Aquilops only reached an adult length of 23.62” (60 cm). The name means “American eagle-face” and is in reference to the fact that it represents the first very basal neoceratopsian found in America and that it has an arched keel on its beak with a bump on the front.

The Funko Pop! Aquilops comes affixed to a clear base and standing in a quadrupedal pose. Her body in turning slightly to the right and her right forelimb is lifted. She measures 5” (12.7 cm) long and stands 3” (7.62 cm) tall to the top of her head. Because this figure is a caricature with exaggerated proportions I won’t bother trying to calculate a scale.

There’s also no point in evaluating the accuracy of a figure like this, but Dolores does display the bump on her beak that gives Aquilops its name and has a basic basal ceratopsian body plan. Her film counterpart isn’t bad either but does have an oddly long and thick tail. The tail is much shorter on the figure.

Dolores’s visage is a cocktail of cute features designed to appeal to the nurturing instincts of us humans. Her head is oversized and rounded, with large black eyes, chubby cheeks, and a slightly open mouth that makes her look delightfully confused and concerned. In addition to the bump on her beak there’s a small horn over her nostrils. Slightly concaved indents are sculpted over her frill, and a cluster of large scales is sculpted under her eyes and along the lower jaw.

Her body is compact, with a short stubby tail. The scales over her body are large and irregularly shaped, with those on her head being less well defined than elsewhere. Her underside is smooth. She’s painted in various shades of orange and is darker along her back than elsewhere. Her tail is ringed in black bands. All of her nails are painted black, and her beak is brown with a dull pink tongue visible inside.

The Funko Pop! Aquilops is an undeniably adorable figure of a neat little basal ceratopsian. Although I don’t normally get into Funko’s dinosaurs this one was a must have desktop companion for me. I would still like to acquire a more realistic rendition of Rebirth’s Aquilops but the best we’ve got so far is a small figure from Mattel that’s included in a large and expensive set. Ideally, we’ll see one included in Toy Monster’s Captivz line, or as a Mattel mini. Either way, I think Dolores is one of those dinosaurs I won’t be able to get enough of and we’ll be seeing her on the blog again, some day.
