This weekend, following a three-day summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House outlined a new trade agreement that could provide tariff relief for several consumer product categories, including toys.
Through the U.S.-China Board of Trade, the countries reached a consensus on recommendations for “more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction.”
For U.S. imports, the affected categories include toys, children’s car seats, holiday decorations, and small appliances. The broader agreement also covers energy and agricultural purchases.
The deal was hailed as a “monumental win” in an email from The Toy Association, sent to members Saturday by Chief Policy Officer Kathrin Belliveau, who recently penned an op-ed for Real Clear World making the case to keep toys tariff-free.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is expected to release additional details on Monday, including information on the products covered and the nature of the tariff relief.
