Dinopool! (Pop! Marvel by Funko)

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the popular Marvel Comics character Deadpool back in 2021, Funko POP released six special figures that year. Included among them was none other than Dinopool, which combines the traits of the fourth wall-smashing Merc with a Mouth and the simply smashing Tyrannosaurus rex

Funko has made countless characters from all manner of genres over the years, including, of course, Jurassic World. But as far as I can tell, Dinopool here is a totally original design for the anniversary series and does not appear in any Deadpool fiction (yet). A T. rex wearing the signature mask did appear in an issue of the comic, but that one was based on Devil Dinosaur.

Dinopool stands about 11 cm tall. He is posed in a battle-ready stance with his tail curling forward on his right, his legs crouched, his arms spread apart, and his mouth open. His weapons, not surprisingly, are two katana swords. Guns also would have worked, but I guess Funko wanted to go with something slightly less violent. Interestingly, Dinopool is apparently capable of gripping them in spite of his lack of thumbs!

”Oh, shell no!”

Like all Funko figures, Dinopool features an enormous spring-loaded bobble head atop a disproportionately small body. As you can see, the head is rather cartoonish, but it’s still clearly that of a T. rex, and not a JW one at that.

Faint, bumpy scales and wrinkles cover the entirety of his body. The tips of his teeth and claws are rounded, as are those of his swords, so it’s fairly safe for kids as well as adults. In addition to his swords, Dinopool is outfitted with a utility belt lined with many pockets and the distinctive Deadpool emblem front and centre.

“Me Grimlock love cameos!”

Naturally, the main colour on Dinopool is bright red, with black running down his back and tail and dark grey for his claws. His teeth are off white and his mouth is light pink with a magenta tongue. Medium grey and medium brown are used for his swords and belt respectively. The emblem is glossy black, red, and white. Finally, his huge round eyes are pure white and surrounded by black. He is precisely what you would expect a Deadpool king tyrant to look like.

I’ll admit that I’ve never been a fan of Funko figures; this is the very first one that I’ve ever bought, and I don’t feel at all inclined to start buying more. Nevertheless, as a lifelong T. rex fan and an average Deadpool fan (I quite enjoyed all three movies, but I’ve never actively followed the comics), I like this silly little guy. For certain he adds a touch of variety on my king tyrant shelf. Dinopool is still available online, and presumably in various brick and mortar stores that stock Funko figures, but do note his price has gone up since I bought him last year.

“All the dinosaurs feared the T. rex!”
