PBS KIDS Celebrates America’s 250th Birthday with New Content

Starting this May, kids and families can embark on a celebratory cross-country adventure with PBS KIDS! It’s new Across America content initiative features educational, patriotic adventures in honor of America’s big 250.

Throughout these series, specials, and shorts, kids will learn about amazing places and people across the 50 states and U.S. territories. Viewers can plan to watch Wowsabout, a 30-minute special from the iconic Jim Henson Company, on May 1.

Set in Sequoia National Park, California, Wowsabout follows Roxy, an artsy, musical hedgehog, and Ronald, a science-loving city-raised pig, on their first camping trip together. Roxy loves to follow her imagination, while Ronald asks big science questions about the natural world. These two puppet pals get into laugh-out-loud adventures filled with songs and surprises, meeting real kids along the way as they explore America’s natural wonders.

The celebration continues on May 23 with the premiere of GBH Kids’ America’s Awesome Kids. This series of 25 live-action shorts introduces viewers to incredible kids from coast to coast, each sharing what makes their home special, their passions, and the ways they’re making a difference in their communities. Families will meet Mahry from Iowa, Sahana from Georgia, Jacob from Louisiana, and many more.

On June 12, families can set out on an adventure with City Island: USA! This miniseries blends animation with real-life locations, following Watt, the little lightbulb with big ideas, and Windy the Kite, as they soar across the country. Watt and Windy are joined by Mr. Rubric, their teacher, who shares fun facts and lessons about each landmark that they visit in the five U.S. regions. The landmarks speak for themselves, literally, sharing quirky anecdotes and fascinating pieces of American history.

Xavier Riddle Celebrates American Heroes is next in the lineup. On June 22, the familiar face of Xavier shines a spotlight on some of America’s trailblazers, including Julia Child, Jackie Robinson, Billie Jean King, and more. Across four hour-long episodes, families will meet athletes, artists, innovators, and leaders who changed American history.

To wrap things up, families can celebrate with “Happy Birthday Qyah,” a special two-part episode of Molly of Denali, plus a special episode of Alma’s Way on June 15. The fun continues throughout the summer with themed compilations from series such as Arthur, City Island, Cyberchase, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Donkey Hodie, Peg + Cat, Phoebe & Jay, Rosie’s Rules, Sesame Street, and more. Additionally, Wild Kratts will spotlight some of America’s most iconic animals, including bald eagles and bison, beavers, wolves, rattlesnakes, and more.
