With the influx of Spinosaurus toys from Mattel following the species’ reintroduction to the silver screen in Jurassic World: Rebirth it’s hard to keep track of all the bits and pieces produced of the T. rex killing, aerial hit and run victim. Surrounding the release of Jurassic Park III, we saw a similar overload of Spinosaurus on everything from animatronic toys to cheese crackers. This is where this peculiar little chunk of plastic dangling from its chain comes in. Produced by Tiger Electronics alongside a Velociraptor and Pteranodon, this is the Electronic Spinosaurus key chain.

Right off the bat, this little guy is super charming. He’s all scrunched up with disproportionately (although proportionate now) short legs and a big goofy head that at one point would roar with light up eyes in response to motion. I cannot imagine being a teacher at the time trying to find which backpack had the dangling migraine machine and unfortunately, I can’t relive that experience as the electronics inside have long since burnt out. The little fella is poised up for a fight with his claws and jaws held high and a tail scrunched around the let him stand up on his own, albeit at a humble 6.5 cm at the sail clocking the figure at about 1:90 scale for the JP3 incarnation of the critter.

In terms of paint application, it’s about what you expect from an early JP 3 Spinosaurus toy with a rusty brown base coat followed by red highlights and milky blue stripes and splashes on the sail. If you were looking for screen accuracy on a now 24-year-old key chain, you’ll surely be out of luck. For what it’s worth, though, the metallic sheen of red and blue is quite appealing and honestly something I’d like to see more of within the current Jurassic Park toy lines. Articulation is similarly not the best with rotation in the legs, arms, tail, and potentially the head, however, the neck joint fought with me the whole time. The best part about the figure is absolutely the sculpt which has no right to be as accurate and appealing as it is. Large croc-esque osteoderms break up a nicely wrinkled hide covering the little munchkin.

At the end of the day, I thought I’d be rather underwhelmed with the schoolyard accoutrement, but his short stature and dorky proportions really won me over in the end. He’s not the best, nor biggest, Jurassic Park 3 Spinosaurus, but for the people behind Furby, it’s an earnest and charming addition to any JP3 collection. Just don’t expect to find it any time soon as listings are few and far between.
